UBO Opposes BTC's Decision on Gorkha Certificates via Social Media Statement

Kokrajhar : The United Bodos' Organization (UBO) has strongly voiced its opposition to the recent notification issued by the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which recognizes Gorkha certificates for land allotment and settlement in the Bodoland Territorial Region. The organization conveyed its dissent through an official statement on its Facebook page.

The BTC notification, dated January 4, 2025, stated that the decision was finalized during an Executive Council meeting held on January 3. The directive enables Gorkha certificates to be used as valid documents for securing land rights within BTC-administered areas, with immediate implementation across all circles in the region.

However, UBO has expressed deep concern over the decision, asserting that it disregards the interests of the indigenous Bodo community. In its Facebook post, UBO criticized the move, claiming that such a step could compromise the cultural and territorial identity of the Bodo people. The organization hinted that this decision was made unilaterally by the BTC leadership, without proper consultation or consideration of its potential long-term impact on the local population.

The post further urged BTC to revoke the notification immediately, warning that the decision might lead to significant social unrest if not addressed. UBO has emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of the indigenous community and ensuring that policy decisions reflect the collective will of all stakeholders.

This public dissent has added a new layer of complexity to the ongoing debates about land rights and settlement policies in the Bodoland Territorial Region. The BTC is yet to respond to UBO's criticism. Meanwhile, the matter is drawing significant attention, with many in the region closely watching how this issue unfolds.
