BTC Issues Notification Recognizing Gorkha Certificates for Land Settlement

Kokrajhar : The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) has issued a notification recognizing Gorkha certificates as valid documents for land allotment and settlement purposes within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

The notification, signed by Shri Rintu Ch. Boro, ACS, Joint Secretary of BTC, stated that the decision was made during an Executive Council meeting held on January 3, 2025. The directive has been circulated to the BTC's administrative departments, including the Land Revenue and Disaster Management (LR&DM) office, District Land Revenue Officers, and Circle Officers of all administrative circles, including Kokrajhar, Bijni, Gossaigaon, Tamulpur, and others.

While the BTC's decision has been implemented to address land settlement concerns, it has also sparked debates in the region. Indigenous organizations and local groups have begun raising questions about its potential impact on the demographic and cultural fabric of the BTR.

The BTC leadership has yet to comment on the emerging concerns, but the move signifies a significant policy shift that is likely to influence land rights discussions in the region.
